Reinertsen Lecture 2011

The Triple Aim: Increasing Affordability by Decreasing the Total Cost of Care by Elliot Fisher, MD, MPH

  • Date: October 27, 2011
  • Location: Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Hotel
Elliot Fisher, MD, MPH, Director of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, will deliver this year’s James L. Reinertsen Lecture. The event will be held in conjunction with the Many Faces of Community Health 6th Annual Conference at the Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport in Bloomington, MN on Thursday, October 27, 2011. The free event will consist of a reception from 5:00-6:30 p.m., with the lecture and discussion to follow from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Dr. Fisher’s topic will be “The Triple Aim: Increasing Affordability by Decreasing the Total Cost of Care”, a topic he is extremely qualified to speak on as his current work focuses on advancing the concept of accountable care organizations (ACOs). That work includes co-directing a joint Brookings-Dartmouth program to advance ACOs through research, coordination of public and private initiatives, and the creation of a learning collaborative that includes several pilot ACO sites across the U.S. Dr. Fisher is also known nationally for his work on the causes of the two-fold differences in spending observed across U.S. regions and health care systems, on understanding the consequences of these variations for health and health care, and on the development and testing of approaches to performance measurement and payment reform that can support improvement.

Dr. Fisher is the James W. Squires, MD Professor at Dartmouth Medical School and Director for Population Health and Policy at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University and completed his internal medicine residency and public health training at the University of Washington. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
