Is it concerning that four people in Oregon developed COVID despite getting both doses of the vaccine?

It was reported in the news last week that four people in Oregon developed mild COVID-19 disease at least 14 days after receiving both doses of the vaccine.  While these cases are unfortunate, they are also expected. Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were found to be about 95% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 disease. Even with highly efficacious vaccines, there will still be a very small number of people who get the disease.  We expect more of these cases to emerge as more doses of vaccine are administered.

It is important to consider that in addition to preventing symptomatic disease, the vaccines have also been shown to prevent progression to severe disease.  It is hoped that for the very small group of vaccinated individuals who get COVID-19 disease, the vaccine will help reduce disease severity.
