What are the statistics on getting COVID-19 if you get the vaccine (breakthrough infections)? (UPDATED*)

Starting May 1, 2021, the CDC transitioned from monitoring all reported vaccine breakthrough cases to focus on identifying and investigating only hospitalized or fatal cases due to any cause.

  • As of August 9, 2021, more than 166 million people in the United States had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • CDC received reports of 8,054 people with COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough infections who were hospitalized or died.
    • 23% of the hospitalizations were reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19.
    • 20% of fatal cases were reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19.

It is important to note that reported vaccine breakthrough cases will represent an undercount, due to voluntary reporting.
