Scope and Target Population:This guideline is targeted toward identification of adult patients at risk for osteoporosis, as well as identification and treatment of those patients with osteoporosis.
Clinical Highlights and Recommendations:- Discuss risk factors for osteoporosis, and primary prevention with all patients presenting for routine health visits.
- Patients with a high pretest probability of low BMD and future fracture should have bone density testing to further define their fracture risk.
- Address pharmacologic options for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis with appropriate patients at risk for or who currently have signs and symptoms of osteoporosis.
Priority Aims:- Increase the evaluation for osteoporosis risk factors in all adults presenting for a preventive visit.
- Improve the treatment of patients diagnosed with osteoporosis.
- Improve diagnostic and therapeutic follow-up of adults presenting with a history of low-impact fracture.
