Description of Treatment/Procedure

The use of auricular acupuncture in treating acute drug withdrawal began in Hong Kong in 1972. Evidence regarding the mechanism for action of the treatment's purported effects on drug withdrawl remains inconclusive.

Committee Summary

The ICSI Technology Assessment Committee finds auricular acupuncture to be a safe adjuvant treatment modality for chemical dependency. Auricular acupuncture has not been proven effective for use in treating chemical dependency.
