Shared decision-making is explored in the April 2013 issue of Minnesota Physician. The article, written by ICSI project leader Jan Schuerman and medical director Claire Neely MD, describes the development of the Collaborative ConversationTM map and the benefits of integrating shared decision-making into usual care. Writing in the March 2013 issue of Minnesota Physician, Gary Oftedahl MD, ICSI's chief knowledge officer, offers his perspective on how to think differently about patient engagement. Noting that "patients are the biggest untapped resource that we have," Oftedahl talks about the difference between patient engagement and patient activation, offers ways to improve the role of providers in patient engagement, shares tools and technologies that may be effective, and discusses strategies to maximize the potential of increased patient engagement. A November 2012 AF4Q publication, Spotlight on Success: 16 Communities Share Their Secrets, includes an article (pages 38 - 41) about an ICSI pilot project that trained the staff of two primary care clinics to use shared decision-making techniques in discussions with patients about colorectal cancer screening options.
